When it comes to weight loss, one of the saddest moments I had to get over was finding out that cheese is not our friend. I’m actually a big fan of cheese, my idea of the ideal cheese sandwich is a slice of cheese between 2 other slices of… cheese. So you can imagine that I was really disappointed when I found out that cheese is not good for weight loss.
Well, before deciding to lose weight I didn’t really give a crap about what I put in my mouth. For instance, I would eat home made mozzarella escalope at least 4-5 times a week (mozzarella is really tasty and cheap around here), Swiss cheese escalope with french fries as a side dish (this I picked up from fast food joints), grilled cheese sandwiches, ecc. Anyway… my point is, I used to eat so much cheese I can’t even believe it.
Well, those times are over now and my advice to you – you should cut back on the cheese as well if you plan on losing weight! However… don’t give up on it for good. There are still a few types of cheese I eat every week, in moderate quantities, now that I know how to control my food portions.
On my list of favorite cheeses, there’s Feta, Mozzarella, Provolone and Ricotta. I know they have fancy names, but they’re very common cheeses when you think about it.
There are many other types of cheese, these are just my favorite because they taste great and they are pretty low in calories, as long as you pay attention at your food portions.
Feta cheese has about 250-260 calories per 100 grams (3.5 ounces). I think it’s pretty reasonable, don’t you think? It has some protein and some fat, which are also healthy, so Feta is probably a good choice, if you’re looking for a salty cheese to spice up your foods. I usually have it with pasta or rice, it’s a great ‘ad-on’, so to speak.
Well, mozzarella cheese is a bit trickier, it has more calories than Feta, this cheese has about 300-320 calories per 100 grams (3.5 ounces) and about the same amount of fat Feta has.I’m gonna tell you a secret, mozzarella cheese is great for preparing simple salads! Slice up some raw veggies, add the mozzarella and – voilà – you have a perfect salad you can eat for dinner!
Well… this must be the fattening cheese on my favorites list. 100 grams (3.5 ounces) or provolone has about 400 calories (more or less..). I usually use it to make sandwiches, so I just cut thin slices of provolone to stuck between those 2 slices of bread. It’s also perfect for sandwiches because it has almost zero carbs! When having a sandwich, you get enough carbs from the bread anyway, so provolone is really a life saver, if you think about it.
I saved the best for last!
3.5 ounces (100 grams) of Ricotta have only 160-175 calories! It’s a great choice for sandwiches or for preparing different salty pies like.. ricotta cheese pie. I’ll try to come up with a simple ricotta cheese pie recipe soon.
Well, there you have it, a few types of cheese you can safely eat without worrying why your diet isn’t working. Of course, you need to keep in mind that you need to control your portions of cheese, don’t make the mistakes I did and go overboard…
PS: You can still eat a slice of 4 cheese pizza from time to time, I’d be a hypocrite to tell you I gave that up! 😀
